| SOME CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE YOU BUY A PUPPY We all love puppies, but they do grow up. Consider what your ideal dog would be like and remember that it takes commitment and work to help your dog develop into the wonderful companion you envision. *If you have never owned a Border Collie please read up on the breed before deciding to purchase a puppy. Border Collies are great dogs but require exercise and mental stimulation to be happy. They are extremely intelligent and love to learn new things. They were bred to work which is why they make such great sporting dogs (and of course, herding, which is what they were bred for and where they excel). A Border Collie can make a great family pet in the right home, however, Border Collies with very high drive belong in herding or sporting homes. If you are a couch potato and want a dog to hang out with while you watch TV do not get a Border Collie. (Or, consider adopting an older Border Collie from a shelter. There are many out there that need good, loving homes where they can enjoy their senior years.) All puppies, regardless of breed, require a great deal of time in the beginning and should be socialized with as many different people, especially children, as you can manage. At the very least you should have your puppy attend a good puppy kindergarten class where he/she can socialize off leash with other puppies. As the puppy matures she/he should attend at least one obedience class. This will help set the stage for a happy, pleasant dog and a happy, pleasant home. If you have children in the home do not expect them to be in charge of the puppy. Everyone in the house should be informed about the care, house training, feeding, etc. But, an adult should always be in charge of or monitor the feeding, training and care of the dog. |
